The Werner Herzog Film Award 2016 goes to
WE COME AS FRIENDS by Hubert Sauper.
The prize, which is awarded annually and for the first time in 2016, can go to feature films, documentaries, a filmmaker, an actor or anyone working in the art of cinema. It will be given to a special achievement in innovation, courage and vision. The award is open to citizens of all countries. There is no application procedure and no competition. An independent international jury, headed by Werner Herzog, finds the film of their choice.
By unanimous acclamation of all jury members, the Werner Herzog Foundation Award 2016 goes to Hubert Sauper for his film WE COME AS FRIENDS.
The jury acknowledges the extraordinary courage of Hubert Sauper to have his own miniature airplane built, flying it himself into the war-torn area of Southern Sudan. The film gives deep insight into the surreal, the dangers, and the power struggles determining the fate of the people in this mostly uncharted territory. What makes WE COME AS FRIENDS particularly remarkable is the caliber of filmmaking, its deep sense of poetry. This is not investigative journalism. There is a strange, all pervading vision we have not seen in world cinema for a long time.
The jury of Werner Herzog Film Prize 2016 consisted of Werner Herzog, Stefan Drössler, Tom Luddy, Ramin Bahrani and Rudolph Herzog.
The award ceremony followed by screening of the award winning film has taken place on Friday, October 21, 2016, 21:00 at the Munich Cinematheque (Filmmuseum München), St.-Jakobs-Platz 1.
